Snow Day

Not bad for only taking 2 quick shots. This was about 6:30 in the morning; sun was not quite up. Daylight was just starting to make an appearance. For you camera fanatics I used no flash and had it set on f/18 or f/22 (I think I took one on each)

It was COLD and windy and still snowing. I used my storm jacket for my camera. I bought it convinced I'd need it on my Washington trip back in September but it turned out to be hot and sunny all week. Anyway, back to my snow day. I situated my camera on the tripod before I even set foot outside! That was a smart idea.

I like the feel of this photo. It was a good idea put your camera on the tripod before heading outdoors. I really should get a tripod...Ben has taken them to school with him.

I have the Nikon D40 and would like to upgrade. My husband insists that the pictures won't be that much better, that the only difference would be if you enlarged the pics (because of the increased pixels). Do you agree? I just love taking pictures but I don't want to spend the money if what he's saying is true. What do you think?

By the way, I haven't taken any classes or anything, so I don't know too much about f-stops, etc., but I feel like I have a good sense of framing a pic, etc. So maybe I should just stick with the D40? I don't know...just thinking out loud. I've had the D40 for two years now.

Hi Lynne, the D40 is a decent camera. In one aspect your husband is correct but there may be more reasons for you to upgrade than just for the pixels when enlarging photos. I'd recommend spending some time out at Nikon's website and do some comparison shopping. It all depends on what you want to do with your camera and photos.
Taking some classes or just learning on your own about f-stops, exposure, etc... can improve your photos greatly. There's a lot of free resources out on the web now days, no need to spend tons of $$ on classes unless you really want to go down that road.

Thanks for the info and for commenting on my blog.

I've been able to just play around with my camera's different settings, using the flash, not using the flash, different modes like A and M and playing around with the f-stops, so I think you're right, there is so much info on the Internet that I could probably teach myself without having to spend a lot of money. I'll check out the Nikon website and look around some more to see if I need to upgrade or not.

I'll see someone's photos sometimes and think, "Okay, is that picture amazing because of the camera or the photographer." Both, I'm sure :)

You also have to be careful as to what you see is photoshopped these days or not. I prefer to do as little editing as possible. There's a line for me when the photo becomes art and not a photo anymore too - but that's just me.
95% of the time I'm on the "A" mode (aperture) I'm trying to learn more of the shutter speed mode and manual mode but I'm not very comfortable with either of those.
